Board Biography
Kevin L. Nichols is a social impact executive and governance leader with over 25 years of experience advising organizations at the intersection of legal risk, human capital strategy, and strategic growth across the legal, technology, and government sectors. He is the Founder, President, and CEO of The Social Engineering Project, Inc., a social impact venture working with Stanford University and industry partners to expand access to technology careers through workforce development initiatives and strategic partnerships. Kevin also served as a senior leader at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, where he contributes to enterprise-wide workforce engagement and organizational effectiveness initiatives within one of the nation’s premier federal research institutions.
Risk Mitigation:
Kevin brings deep expertise in legal and regulatory risk through more than a decade working in Big Law environments including Morrison & Foerster, Paul Hastings, and Holland & Knight. Earlier in his career he also advised Fortune 500 corporate legal departments on information governance, litigation readiness, and eDiscovery technologies while working with legal technology providers. This work provided exposure to enterprise risk issues including data retention policies, legal hold compliance, cybersecurity considerations, and the use of AI-driven technology-assisted review in regulatory and litigation matters. He also served on the advisory board of Trusted CI, a National Science Foundation–supported cybersecurity consortium focused on strengthening cyberinfrastructure governance nationwide.
Human Capital & Organizational Performance:
Kevin is recognized for leading large-scale talent engagement and leadership development initiatives. He has designed enterprise engagement strategies including listening tours, leadership summits, town halls, and climate surveys while advising executives on organizational culture and workforce strategy. Over the course of his career, he has coached more than 200 leaders and implemented data-driven approaches to improving employee engagement and organizational performance. His work positions him as a board-level contributor in the growing area of human capital oversight and organizational risk governance.
Strategic Partnerships & Business Development:
Kevin has extensive experience building cross-sector partnerships and supporting early-stage venture growth. He has served as a startup advisor to multiple venture-backed companies including dumpling, a platform enabling independent grocery entrepreneurs nationwide; MyPurpleFolder, a digital health company focused on patient medical record interoperability; and Legal Innovators, an alternative legal services provider developing new talent pipelines for global law firms. In these roles he advised founders on branding, business development strategy, and ecosystem partnerships while facilitating introductions to venture capital investors and institutional partners during early-stage capital raising efforts.
Board & Governance Service:
Kevin currently serves as Board Chair of Flourish Agenda, Inc., where he has chaired both the Audit and Compensation Committees and helped guide executive leadership evaluation, financial oversight, and organizational growth. He has also served on the State Bar of California’s Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation, participating in confidential investigations and assessments of judicial candidates, experience that strengthened his governance perspective on leadership vetting, risk evaluation, and institutional accountability.
A frequent speaker on leadership and workforce innovation, Kevin holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley and has completed executive education programs at Stanford University, Yale University, and the UC Berkeley Haas School of Business.
